What a finish
Congratulations to Lanzarote C.C for winning the league again, thoroughly diserved lads. The season is coming to a great climax with 4 teams fighting for 3 places in the playoffs, with the Dragons in with an outside chance of crashing the party. On a personal note it was great to be a part of Los Diablosīs victory over bitter rivals(and friends)The fishermans.A great all round performance from Craig was the differance between the 2 sides.Los Diablos v Dragons this Sunday at Tias will go to someway sorting out Plate and Championship places,Dragons must win and Diablos need to win to keep tabs on the 3 teams above them.Good luck to all those involved in the matchs this weekend.

A good day had by all.
On 20 th July Tenerife Conquerers landed at 7.15 hrs in Lanzarote airport and I went to pick them up, we got to the ground by 8.00 am, after getting ready haveing breakfast and some excercise we started the first game of 25/25 by 10 am. Tenerife won the toss and elected to field, l.c.c. started very bad first wicket went in 2nd over with the score of three runs and finally we can not cross 113 runs in 21.3 overs that was a bad day for us, Frankie made 21 runs, Nitin 23 runs, and rest dont ask , Tenerife's start was not good, they were 4 overs 22 runs and 3 wickets and when they reached 72 in thirteen overs, there was chances for both teams but after drinks they made thier goal quickly and won the match easily ,, cheer,,, for Tenerife.
The second match started about 2.30 pm and Tenerife fielded again like first match and The Select XI made 162 runs in 20 overs losing 5 wkts and Tenerife could not make that score they finished thier overs and can reach up to 145 runs losing 7 wkts, so The Select XI had victory over Tenerife although match was very close with 4 overs remaining, in the last over they needed about 23 runs to win the match but they could only do 5 runs and everything went smooth as planned.
Thanks once again to the spectators who came to watch the match and supporters and of course players as well, Ayuntamiento de Yaiza thanks a million for letting us play cricket in Lanzarote
regards ,, Daniel Lanzarote Cricket Club.

Umpires
Lads, over the recent weeks I have seen umpires being abused verbally over some decisions. A close run out that went against a St Georges batsman and an lbw decision that went against the Fishermans. I was opposite the umpire for the run out and never saw the fumble by the stumper but the finger went up but the batsman was adament he got home, although there was no swearing a few words were said. The lbw decision was a bit more straight forward, all downwind from the batsman heard a nick off the bat but those by the umpire, upwind, never heard a thing, the bowler appealed and up went the finger again.Remember the umpire cant reverse his decision, the only other option is to ask the bowler to withdraw his appeal. Please remember that the umpires give up their time for the love of the game and must be applauded for that and not questioned over their decisions.Thats my moan for the month so please show appreceation for the guys who make your cricket possible.

The second Knockout Cup 1/4 finals weekend completes the semi-finals line up.
This weekend saw the final two quarter finals of the Knockout Cup. However it didn't produce the upsets that we saw the previuos week.Lanzarote confirmed their positions as favourites to win the competition with a confortable win over the Commitments. Lanzarote posted 253 with the Commitments only amasing 132 before being bowled out. In the other 1/4 final Los Diablos struggled against a strong bowling attack scoring just 131 all out. The Fisherman's reply was swift and deadly reaching the winning total with 5 wickets still in hand after only 20 overs of their innings gone. Proof, if proof was needed, that The Fisherman's Inn could be the team to challenge Lanzarote for the Championship as well as the KO Cup titles. A mention must go to Pete (Back row,far left) for his Man of the Match performance with bat and ball. Unlucky to be given out on 60, he also got 6 wickets for 35 runs off 6 overs. Log on next week to see how the Colts got on against Los Diablos (in Tias)and the to see how the Dragons play against Playa Blanca. (Yaiza)

Shock, horror. The devils win
Los Diablos won their 1st game of the season against a weak St Georges side. Jon decided to bat 1st as we have struggled to chase a decent score in our previous matches. 266 in 30 overs was the total amassed. 50`s scored by James, Ian and Gary supported by 30`s by Craig and Max seemed to put the game out of reach for the champs. Joe and Des opened for St Georges and at the 15 over mark were on target at 120 without loss. A group huddle from the Devils, with a match winning teamtalk from the capt produced a breathtaking performance from his troops. A bowling change brought our own king of spin at one end, Ricky and me with my slow meat pies at the other.Des clean bowled by Ricky for a great 90+ followed by another wicket that started the rot. Ricky took 5wkts and 1 run out and i took the rest.Everyone on the diablos side played their part in what turned out to be great victory. Congratulations to Lanzarote CC who won their 6th straight league match on sunday and with 1 left to play look to be unstoppable in their quest to be the new champs. Meanwhile the rest of the teams are only halfway through their fixtures so plenty left to play for.

Daves Thoughts
I was tempted to write thorts but I was repremanded for my missuse of the correct spelling of certain words, in fact some people have been using spellchecker on my column, well get a life lads.
All of Los Diablos are looking forward to the start of the season, what a difference a year makes, last year our 1st game was against Lanzarote c.c and we had 7 players including my 72 years young father in law who broke his arm during the game. This year we have 12 guys chomping at the bit to get our revenge against Frankie Suki and the rest of the team. This year is going to be a very close with all the teams in with a chance of finishing the season with plenty of wins under their belts. I hope all the players stay fit and healthy for the season(except Des and Brownie when they play us)and sportsmanship and fairplay are in abundance. May 4th cant come quick enough.
Only joking about Des and Brownie but we could do with both of them booking a holiday for the 22nd of June.

15/15 Cup Final 2008
The 15/15 final really lived up to it's billing as a great game, played between two very good teams in front of around 90 people at the stadium in Tias, Sunday 16th March
Lanzarote C.C. opened the batting but got off to a stuttering start, a drop fortunately going down in the first over and sluggish on the run rate. St. George's definitely seemed on top as the wickets started to fall after the forth over though a dropped catch then seemed to give Lanzarote a second wind as they started finding the boundaries and upped the run rate. Suki top scored with a rapid 46 off the bat before being run out. 132 for 6 is how the innings finished, Dave 'Brownie' Brown taking 2 wickets for 13 runs and game on with a required run rate at just under 9 runs an over.
Despite the tight bowling we have come to expect from Lanzarote C.C. the St. George's openers set off at a lightning rate of 11 runs an over, good stroke play and quick running between the stumps set the standard and a partnership ofaround 70 runs. Then as one wicket fell, 3 more went down in quick succession for a mere 8 runs. The game swung back in Lanzarote's favour as they picked up the heat on the batsmen, the pressure building after each ball. With the crowd totally engrossed in yet another classic game, 11 runs were required from the final 12 deliveries. John 'the Colonel' Hardy held his nerve as 5th bat keeping the Captain on strike where possible and the winning runs were dispatched with one over remaining. Des 'the Cap' Stonier 70 not out in a mercurial display of batting, Sonu taking 2 wickets for 20,
hats off to everyone involved in the game, thanks to Danny and Geoff for umpiring and all involved in organizing the tournament.

2nd Semi Final
A fantastic game of cricket once again between two of the old rivals which came down to the very last over.
Playa Blanca won the toss and elected to bat in this second 15/15 semifinal, sending in the Steve and Steve double act to open, and boy did they do that setting their team well on the way smashing St. George's opening bowlers all over the park and looking to put the game out of reach. It took until the 8th over for the fielding side to make an impact, and by the end of the 15 overs had bowled one and catches taken for the other 2 wickets. 1 hour gone, 15 overs played, Playa Blanca were sitting on a healthy 136/3 with 40+ runs a piece for the openers.
St. George's started off slowly in bat, restrained by some great opening bowling and looking at a run rate of ten an over by the 4th over. The Captain and Vice Captain held their creases well until Des hooked a high shot which resulted in a great outfield catch. Still anyone's game though with the talismanic Dave Brown getting his eye in and looking more and more confident. St. George's lost 2 more wickets to some great fielding before 'Stocky' (the keeper) stepped up to the crease with around 3 overs left to bowl and 20 odd runs required. Nathan held his nerve and played a great supporting role for Brownie to hit the winning runs with only 2 or 3 balls remaining and carrying his bat for 78.

A great game played in a great spirit, keeping players and spectators on the edge of their seats to the end. Next game the final - Lanzarote C.C. vs. St. George's C.C. If it's anywhere as good as this one it'll be a treat for any cricket lover - see you there.

Cup Weekend
What a Sunday, Playa Blanca beat Fishermans and Lanzarote beat Diablos. Pre-season reports from the south of the island had Playa Blanca struggling to get a side together, wernt they wrong. Playa Blanca played great and but for a good opening stand for the Fishermans the southerners were in total command. I'm still upset at our result having lanzarote at 81 for 6 with 3 overs to go suki hit 5 6īs including 20 off the last over.chasing 116 a slow start hindered us, with a questionable 1st wicket which the other umpire would have called a wide, leg before was appealed for by the 3rd man,who appealed for everything even when we scored boundries and the finger went up. I apologise for my reaction but I know I was not out. Maybe more during the week if i have got my thorts together.

Accused
Wasnīt planning on writing anything till after Sundays games but have been accused of brown nosing in my last report, to put it straight I will give praise where praise is due but will also voice my opinion aswell, but will show some deccorum in my news page. During St Georges game I mentioned that Los Diablos would have a good season and was told by a bragging rival team that we are a 2man team, James and Craig. All the teams have their strong players but without their team mates they will not win every game. St Georges have Des and Brownie as big players Lanzarote have Frankie and Suki, Dishermans have danny and Jamie and new boys the Commitments have Paul and Rhys(our league sponsers NATURALLY FLOORS)and all will tell you without 11 players on the pitch you will struggle. Ian our captain and Jon our mentor(or should that be mental)have got a good squad of team players to pick from,3 very good bowlers and 3 decent bowlers and 9 batsmen who could each score plenty of runs. I'mm not saying we will win all and sundry but we will give all the so called strong teams a good match. Enough ranting from me, email me at lanzadave1@hotmail.com if you want any subjects raised.

Pitches
Sundays 15/15 match, Fishermans v Playa Blanca was postponed due to pitch availability. Jack Talbot organises the fixtures for the season, 15/15, knock out cup, the league and play offs, getting pitches is allways going to be hard when dealing with the ayuntimientos, how superman Jack manages to get things organised is beyond belief, Thursday eve football training, Friday night girls football which they won 20-0(my daughter scoring 4), Saturday morning supervising 2 matchs, dodgy refing 1of them, and then batting for the colts side on Sunday, he deserves the thanks of all us sports lovers. Getting back to Sundays game, a big opening stand for St Georges, 50+ for both Joe and Des killed the game for a gallent colts side who were never going to reach St Georges total. The colts are the future of cricket on this small island and with Jacks guidence the future is looking good. More ramblings from me next week with hopfully the 15/15 semis complete.Good luck to all playing this Sunday and our best wishes to Diablos reject Darren(of La Cabana fame)who at the time of this being written is undergoing surgery on a badly damaged shoulder, good luck mate we need you back playing soon so Jon can be kept interested in the games against Fishermans.
