About Lanzarote Cricket Association

History

Cricket in Lanzarote started in the 90's following a succession of games organise by the first club on the island; Lanzarote Cricket Club, and a makeshift team of ex pats, played on mats upon gravel pitches.

Over the years this developed into the first official cricket league in Lanzarote in 2005, consisting of The L.C.C. and the newly formed teams of Playa Blanca C.C. and St. George's C.C. based in Puerto del Carmen, predominantly played at the picturesque (and Astroturf), football ground in Yaiza.

Under the L.C.A, the league has subsequently grown with the arrival of The Fisherman's C.C. and The Dragons C.C. in 2006, The Diablos C.C. in 2007, and the Colts and Commitments Cricket Clubs making up an 8 team league in 2008.
Now, stronger than ever, we are looking forward to developing cricket further and strengthening our ties with Cricket España.

Cricket España

Cricket is first recorded as being played in Spain in the year 1809 by soldiers of General Lord Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). It was during the Peninsular war that the soldiers played the game in and around Ciudad Rodrigo, Lugo and Orense. From that date there are many recordings of the game being played by visiting British land and sea forces, either between themselves or against local British expatriate communities.
However, the game really started a new era in Spain with the founding of Madrid Cricket Club in 1975. It was based on British and Indian players, but soon crossed other national lines when West Indians and eventually Spanish members joined. That was only the beginning, as many other clubs have found out trying to persuade Spaniards to part with land for a sport with the classic "When you're in, you're out" explanations was soon found to be unworkable; and that was only one of the difficulties.
Mission Statement:

  • To promote cricket in Spain through clubs and academia.
  • To encourage young people (Spanish and non-Spanish residents) to play cricket in Spain.
  • To develop cricketing skills and knowledge for all ages, through a structured coaching and education programme.
  • To develop representative Spanish national teams for international competition.
  • To encourage a competitive yet good sporting attitude throughout the game.
  • To integrate and maintain cricket in Spain through membership of the Association Española De Cricket and the European Cricket Council.

Future of Cricket in Lanzarote

We now have the backing from Cricket Espana, including coaching courses, umpiring courses and funding towards both equipment and the expansion of the game. A lot has been achieved over a very short space of time here in Lanzarote, from sending a team to compete alongside Spain´s finest in la Manga 2008 to the development of the game all the way down to grass roots, encouraging the youth on the island to pick up a bat, bowl a ball or take catches in the field.
We have already been host to one touring team from Sussex who were extremely impressed by both the set up we have here and the standard of the cricket played and assure us that Lanzarote offers a great destination for cricket teams, who in turn bring with them experience, knowledge and further contacts.

Support & Sponsorship

Of course, everyone is welcome along to the games, and if anyone would like to contribute, we are now in the process of having Match Ball Sponsors.
